Austin, Texas-based 17-year-old singer-songwriter Grace Humphries releases a new single, “Good Enough” this Aug 30. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios with Ian Barter, the artist with a First Soprano award gained from the TPSMEA All-State Choir contest shows just how good she really is.
The song opens with Humphries’ thick, rich and expressive voice immediately breaking into the scene. She sings slowly over an immersion, remembering an unfaithful lover. A ticking beat builds the song with subtlety and seamlessly brings the instrumentals to us. The chiming guitars start to shimmer as she recalls him regretting his decisions. But then the chorus wakes us from the memories with her voice soaring majestically, showcasing that rich tone, over the drums that finally drops and she concludes, “But it’s you who wasn’t good enough for me.”
The lyrics are diaristic, poetic, and retrospective at the same time. They provide Humphries with a story that keeps us hooked. Best of all is her storytelling tone, which she creates with her heartfelt voice, once reflective, then empowered, only to reach deeper into her emotions and reflections. The dynamics are what keep the song so engaging throughout and what makes her seem like a genuine storyteller, replete with relatability.
The drums bustle to keep up with the heightened emotions and intensity of the music, while the country wails float over the instrumentals. “Good Enough” is a relatable heartbreaker that shows you we will always be good enough for what’s right for us.
