“Grey Matter,” a collaboration between musician and pathologist Bob Saganas and drummer Achilles Papagrigoriou, is a distinctive blend of technical proficiency and musical depth. Recorded and mixed at Ocean Sound Recordings in Norway, the track is inspired by Saganas’s own medical studies of brain matter, aiming to create a piece as complex and dynamic as the brain itself. The result is an exhilarating mix of math rock and flamenco guitar styles that challenge both the performer and listener.
“Grey Matter” opens with intricate, melodic guitar riffs layered with vibrancy and precision, each phrase twisting into unexpected turns that showcase Saganas’s skill and command over the guitar. The drums, driven by Papagrigoriou’s dynamic beats, punctuate the composition with punchy, shifting rhythms that give the track momentum and an ever-changing texture. The intricate guitar work shines with bright, shimmering notes, occasionally building to shrill, sky-reaching highs, only to be grounded again by the complex, trickling drum patterns.
What was put behind the experience was drum tracking, 8-string and guitars, flamenco, reamped and polyphonic, bass, and synths, which create a blend that is both ambient and intense, with raw, live energy. Drawing inspiration from progressive rock and math rock giants like Polyphia, Charlie Robbins, Ichika Nito, and Steve Vai, Grey Matter is a captivating piece that will resonate with fans of technical rock and instrumental exploration.
Stay tuned because Saganas is coming live on November 22nd at Kyklos Music Venue in Limassol, Cyprus, where Saganas will perform with his progressive metal band, Joakem, opening for Sakis Tolis of Rotting Christ.
