‘Heart On My Sleeve,’ Ella Mai’s sophomore album, features Latto, Roddy Ricch, and others.
Ella Mai, a British R&B singer, has released her sophomore album four years after her first.
The 15-track album, titled Heart On My Sleeve, has guest appearances from Latto, Roddy Ricch, and Lucky Daye. Ella began the rollout with the singles “DFMU” and “Leave You Alone,” which she released in January and March, respectively. In April, she made an official announcement about the album on her social media accounts.
The “Trip” singer recently said on Instagram, “I poured my full heart into this record, more so than ever before.” “I’m really looking forward to my sophomore year. Let’s start from the beginning!”
In a press release, Mai said, “Heart On My Sleeve actually depicts my life in real time.” “The album takes you on a romantic rollercoaster through heartbreak, relational ups and downs, and all the intricacies that exist in the grey spaces in between.”
Mai told Complex UK that the platinum success of her self-titled debut in 2018 caused her to mature significantly for this new album.
She explained, “This era is a mature version of myself.” “I’m still the same person, just in a more elevated form.” People seem to forget that when I published Ella Mai, I was 23/24 years old. Now that I’m 27, I’ve grown so much as a person—I’m a lady! I went through a lot that my younger self couldn’t understand.”
She also stated that her four-year break was voluntary, despite public demand for new songs.
“People would message me asking, ‘Are you still doing music?’ and I’d respond, ‘Hmmm… Yeah!’ I believe that in this social media era, things move at a breakneck rate, and people lose interest rapidly. We pay attention to one thing before moving on to the next. It’s not like rap, where you can release an album and then follow it up with another project the following year. R&B does not belong in that category. You must take your time and complete the task correctly.”
