Hey You by Ubiquity Machine: Review
Music veterans Dan Marsh and Howard Rabach make up Ubiquity Machine and their latest song ‘Hey You’ is a highlight of their songwriting prowess.
Starting with a chaotic drum break, the song soon calms down to a dark, brooding arpeggiated guitar paving the way for the expressive vocals to take the mic. A tasteful blend of Americana, Soul, and Indie, the vocals tell the story of a North Dakota girl longing for California. The theatrics of the vocals beautifully portrays her struggles and journey as she moves from place to place in search of warmth and a place called home. The call-and-response chorus has a heart-wrenching hook as if it directly talks to the listeners reminding them everybody needs a sunshine. This makes the song relatable on a personal level.
The instrumentation and the arrangement of the song are particularly noteworthy in the storytelling aspect of it. The opening drum break signifies the chaotic nature of the story and the dark, brooding guitar parts perfectly convey the melancholy. The theatrical part towards the end before bringing back the drum break and going all out is just brilliant. The song couldn’t ask for a better ending than bringing back the chorus but this time a lot heavier for the final breakdown. Also, the accompanying music video is just as great enhancing the listening experience.
