Hollow by Kit Citrine: Review
With 25 years of experience performing in front of audiences across the country, Orlando-based musician Kit Citrine is aware that what comes from the heart touches the heart. Her father’s passing inspired her to write “Hollow,” a heartbreaking song that was recently released as the third single.
The song just seemed to flow out of her after she returned from the funeral, and she wrote, recorded, and produced it all by herself. The intense grief was palpably conveyed and portrayed in all its exposed nakedness. She explained: “It represents the harrowing feelings of fresh, soul-crushing grief, the alienation, and the frustration of existing in a society that expects you to just move on and “get over it” when you are shattered and empty.” It would make sense given how the gritty, defiant vocals of Kit Citrine are complemented by the eddy synth, thrudding percussion beats, and building intensity of the melodies. Her voice rose to a crescendo of boiling resentment and then collapsed into a crushingly painful tone as it sank from its emotional high. She made extensive use of her musical theatre skills to represent the experience’s maelstrom of emotions.
Quotable lyrics:
“They’re watching for their watches for the first time I should be over it
Yeah, positive thinking and a smiley face should do the trick
At least I can take their platitudes and attitudes in stride
‘Cause I’ve got nothing left inside”
The track is part of a two-year-long collection of autobiographical songs released as her debut album, “Midnight Masquerades”. Make sure to check it out!
