On Holy Dancing Girls, the Cornwall-based, female-fronted three-piece, Tony Fox, throws raw punk energy, psychedelic atmosphere, and poetry-driven storytelling into a wonderfully unruly mix. There’s a spiritual streak running through the album, too, with pagan imagery, repetitive rhythms, and a deep connection to nature giving its rock and roll heart a ritualistic pulse. This is about saying something real, feeling it in your bones, and finding the strength to keep moving.
“I’m Wrecked” makes that intention clear from the outset. Grinding, revving fuzzy guitars rumble alongside steady, thumping drums, creating a catchy groove that carries the song forward without softening its emotional weight. Tony’s high voice soars above the instrumentation, shifting between melodic singing and forceful spoken-word delivery. That blend gives the performance a fiercely personalisation, as though the words are being pulled straight from lived experience. Written around grief and the loss of loved ones, the song explores the comforting idea that those who leave us are never entirely gone. Its rough-edged sound makes the emotion feel all the more immediate.
“Calling” takes a slower, more measured approach. The rhythm moves at an unhurried pace while Tony sings in a light, soft voice that still carries conviction. Its theme of loneliness amid crowded city life adds a reflective dimension to an album otherwise brimming with defiance and movement. The song explorers how people can be surrounded by others yet remain so disconnected from the world around them?
Across Holy Dancing Girls, the songs explore grief, spiritual connection, feminine power, homelessness, resilience, and the restorative freedom of dancing. “Ode to the Moon” draws on lunar mythology and transformation, while “Energy” longs for reconnection with nature. “Fire” celebrates instinct and inner strength, and “Rising” turns perseverance into a rallying cry.
Behind Tony’s mysterious, theatrical persona is a deeply DIY spirit shaped by West Cornwall’s social realities and artistic community. The album shows that even in the darkest moments, we can find our fire, reclaim our joy, and rise again. Holy Dancing Girls is a raw, heartfelt call to dance through the darkness rather than surrender to it.
