Chicago-based rapper and songwriter Chris Herring gets real about struggles in life in his latest single, “I Am,” released on September 11, 2024. Recorded in his semi-truck studio and mixed by engineer Slavis, the track revolves around resilience, self-improvement, and societal critique, making it a source of both entertainment and inspiration.
“I Am” opens with lush, shimmering instrumentals that create an immersive atmosphere, quickly followed by Herring’s deep, grave voice, announcing that the song is only for entertainment purposes, as though he is alerting that heavy stuff is coming up. Glitchy, calm, buzzing beats that drop soon after build an electrifying vibe, setting the stage for Herring’s composed yet fierce delivery. His rapping showcases a natural flow, moving effortlessly through his topics—whether discussing career advancement, personal growth, or the battle against drug addiction.
One of the standout elements of “I Am” is its rapid-fire bridge, where Herring tackles broader societal issues like inflation, corrupt elections and other elements that creates a hurdle for the average citizen, with relentless energy. The lyrics come at a fast pace, leaving no room for pause, effectively mirroring the urgency of these concerns.
The chorus stands out with Herring declaring, “I am not who you think I am / Some may think it’s sweet ’cause I say, yes ma’am,” emphasizing that he is beyond the masks he wears for the sake of professionalism. It shows that he has stuck to his own identity and ambitions regardless of societal perceptions.
Herring’s artistry isn’t limited to music. Having performed at the 1999 Super Bowl and worked with stars like Tank and Chris Brown, his range extends to the national stage. Stay tuned for more hits from Chris Herring.
