“I Don’t Need You (Someday),” the debut release from Daph Veil, the solo project of Paula Laubach, offers an immersive experience with its dark wave-inspired sound. Released on September 26, 2024, the track was recorded at the Ice Cream Factory Studio in Austin, Texas, with Laubach performing all vocals and instrumentation, showing us that she came packed and prepared in the industry. But Jeff Conner provided the driving drum rhythms and totally rocked it.
“I Don’t Need You (Someday)” opens with thumping drums and shimmering guitars, immediately creating an engaging atmosphere that pulls the listener in. As the layers build, Paula’s voice, ethereal and breathy, floats above the instrumentation, imbuing the song with a hypnotic, psychedelic mood. Her vocal delivery seems as though it is suspended in the air as it weightlessly takes us into a trance-like state while the melody unfurls.
There’s a subtle power in the contrast between the pulsing beat and the dreamy, almost detached vocals. The dark wave elements—marked by its moody tones and atmospheric production—lend a sense of melancholy, perfectly suited to the theme of self-realization.
