Zimbabwean artist Dimitri D. Kwenda created an alternative hip-hop idea, “Dimitri & The Scarecrow,” where “scarecrow” is used as a metaphor for the agrarian reform system implemented in his home country. Dimitri released his five-track EP “In Hindsight” on March 1, 2024, which is a poetic, satirical, and humorous way for Dimitri to express social matters from the point of view of an observer, idealist critic, and “the privileged.” He seamlessly changes between speaking from the point of view of himself to the “scarecrow,” providing varying depths of view.
“Hindsight,” the opening track of the EP, immediately hits you with the varying vocal sounds of whispers of “scarecrow” sandwiched between high extroverted sounds of “people,” which creates a sense of curiosity for the song. This track sheds light on the social issues of the agrarian reform system through Dimitri’s poetic, upbeat verses.
“Freedom Seekers” explores the transformation of a child oblivious to the constraints of the world to an adult who has a “sharper mind” and “widened eyes”, becoming a “freedom seeker.” The upbeat loudness of the chorus will have you adopting this song as an anthem while singing along to “We Are Freedom Seekers.” “Magitare” closes this EP with an eye-opening track featuring Raven Duchess.
Overall, “In Hindsight” is an EP that will leave you more “woke” to social issues through fast-paced poetic verses layered with live instrumentals.
