Indie band Forgotten Garden grieves and reminisces in the long, dark, wintry nights in their latest EP, “In Memoriam.”
Led by Inês Rebelo’s vocals and Danny Elliott’s instrumentation, Forgotten Garden explores themes of mourning, memory, and the passage of time.
The EP opens with the brooding and enchanting guitars and steady drums of the opener, “Memoriam – EP Mix.” Rebelo’s soft and ethereal vocals float over the haunting, dark instrumentals, very much like Lana Del Rey. She brings an emotional resonance to the music as she sings of the grieving phase, where you are still incredulous about the passing.
“Road To Silence” gets lonesome and melancholic with stirring strings and heavy with the deep timbre of guest vocalist Michael Rattray. He duets with Rebelo’s tender vocals, singing of a soldier who ends up homeless and alone after returning from war.
“The Wind That Brings The Snow” is a Celtic folk-rock ballad inspired by a tragic mountaineering accident in Scotland. She sings with mourning and ghostly tones that remind me of Florence Welsh. The instrumentals get really cinematic as the high-pitched bagpipes wail out, creating a cold space, whereas the native American rattle ominously buzzes to bring a biting texture to the misery.
Closing out the EP is the Christmas Carol-inspired ghostly reminiscence of “Christmas Time.” Rebelo’s low range and trailing vocals are supported by piano keys that mimic her intonations, complemented by wailing violin strings to unify that abject nostalgia in a touching conclusion.
Listen to “In Memoriam” and allow Forgotten Garden to guide you to healing in your grieving journey.
