Progressive acoustic guitarist, Mark Vickness and his 7-member musical collective, MVI (Mark Vickness Interconnected), have ventured into the ethereal landscapes of nature with their album “In the Rain Shadow.” This thematic exploration of the high desert is inspired by California’s Owens Valley, where the rain is scarce due to meteorological patterns.
“High Desert,” the album’s opening track, introduces us to the sonic tapestry of “In the Rain Shadow.” It begins with the gentle strumming of acoustic guitars, gradually layering an array of organic instrumentals that stir up a multitude of sensations. As the music swells, it ebbs and flows like the winds that sculpt the desert’s landscape.
The instrumental album offers much orchestral ambiance complementing various natural phenomena with different instrumental tones and tunes. The song titles clarify the meteorological or geological features they will explore. The finale, “In The Rain Shadow,” mirrors the breathtaking vistas of the rain shadow. It commences with the intricate strums of guitars and introduces a rippling, sensational melody with strings. Soon, the percussion ushers in a rhythmic pulse that propels the song forward.
MVI showcases a nuanced stance on music with ingenious musicalities, handling the aspects with violin, cello, oboe, jazz quartet and percussion instruments. “In the Rain Shadow” by MVI goes cross-genre with jazz, classical, progressive rock, etc. Listen to this eclectic album, “In the Rain Shadow” on Spotify.
