Botswana’s Overthrust releases their newest album, Infected By Myth, released this very July 5 via Indian River Music Company. This sonic sledgehammer will leave you battered, bruised, and begging for redemption as you are reminded of your incoming death.
Recorded in both Cape Town, South Africa and Pine Island, Florida, Infected By Myth has all the hallmarks of the death metal genre: the distorted guitars that buzz like angry hornets, the pummeling drums and the guttural vocals that spew forth with unholy fury.
The album opens with a bang. “Fallen Witches” kicks off with a bloodcurdling scream, followed by distortion and grit. Hoarse vocals bark out a tale of ancient evil, while the rhythm section lays down a foundation of thunderous brutality.
“Infected” is a menacing and threatening assault on the senses, with guitars that snarl and vocals that gnash. “Slaves of Myth” throws in some chaotic dissonance, like record scratching and shrill howls.
Overthrust brings to you the power of dynamics on the stand-out track, “Overthrust Deathmetal,” where a reflective melody emerges amidst the crushing riffs. Meanwhile, exotic drumbeats create a sort of rhythm for us to groove to.
The album closes with a powerful statement. “Silenced Voices of Holy” begins with a spoken word intro, “God loves us all/God encourages us to drink like a fish/God encourages us to smoke like a chimney…We are all going to die.” It is delivered in a sharp, exotic accent, that challenges traditional notions of faith. With sharp, shrill writhing guitars layered over distortion, a head-nodding rhythm closes Infected By Myth.
