It’s Only Now That I Know by Matt Saxton: Review
Life is a collection of events, experiences, emotions, and memories we accumulate along the way, whether they are good or bad. We usually spend more time reminiscing as we get older because there is more of the past to look back on with fresher eyes. Matt Saxton has put his retrospective journey into his new folk-rock song, “It’s Only Now That I Know”. He described the song’s inspiration as “encapsulating the general theme, which is about finding some kind of wisdom and acceptance by looking back at the past and recognizing both the successes and the failures.”
In this song, the UK-based singer-songwriter shows off an honest, vulnerable side of himself that listeners can easily connect with. And he manages to do it gracefully, with nothing overcomplicating. The organ and piano arpeggios are combined to give shape and a ceaseless movement to the tune. Loops of heavenly vocals in harmonies and melodies keep swirling in motion as the song progresses, taking the listeners higher and higher into an effervescent daydream back in time. Matt Saxton’s voice came across wisely and soulfully, like a fine wine that only gets better with time. Some smooth electric guitar riffs add on to the nostalgic vibe, while the drumbeat has its peak moments to shine before the song slowly fades out.
The song is one of the eight tracks on the eponymous album, which was released on 2nd September. We can’t wait for you to listen to it.
