Sometimes life gets in the way of making music, but the songs never quite leave us. Detroit-based singer-songwriter Jeff Graham knows that feeling all too well, and his self-titled EP feels like a welcome return to a road he began travelling nearly a decade ago. Rooted in guitar-driven power pop and Americana, this four-track release captures the bittersweet business of moving on, looking back, and realizing that time waits for nobody.
Opening track “Leaving Chicago” immediately gets things moving with bustling beats, melodic guitars, and fuzzy, grinding riffs that give the song a lively, slightly gritty edge. Graham sings with earnest passion, bringing a personal touch to this tale of leaving a familiar city behind. There’s a lovely tension between the energetic instrumentation and the nostalgia running through the lyrics, as memories of Chicago’s bright summers and glittering skyline outlast the less glamorous realities of city life.
By contrast, “Marathon” takes a gentler, more reflective route. Softly strummed guitars create an intimate backdrop for Graham’s relaxed, storytelling delivery as he traces a life shaped by restless movement, romance, road trips, and late-night gigs. The recurring sense that life is catching up lends the song a wistful undercurrent, turning its rambling adventures into something more profound. There’s a timeless, conversational quality here, as though an old friend is recounting the winding road that brought him to the present.
Recorded entirely at home, with Graham handling nearly every instrument himself, the EP has the charm of a personal labour of love. Ultimately, Jeff Graham is a warm, melodic reminder that even when life sends us off course, there’s always a chance to pick up the guitar and find our way back.
