Queen Anne, the indie-pop duo of Katie Silverman and Sandy Chila, has just released their second single, a cover of David Bowie’s iconic 1983 hit “Let’s Dance.” Known for fusing ’80s melodicism with a dark, modern edge, the duo reimagines the track less as a glossy dancefloor anthem and more as an intimate, cinematic moment. Silverman, already recognized for her acting roles in New Girl and PEN15, steps into the musical spotlight here with remarkable ease, channeling Bowie while giving the song a nocturnal spin.
It opens with a haunting guitar strum, immediately stripping away the neon sheen of the original. Silverman’s tender, creamy, and vintage-tinged voice comes dripping like honey in its lusciousness. When she breathes the words “If you say run, I’ll run with you,” you will be immediately reminded of Lana Del Rey at the same time, too, as it lands like a secret pact, all about surrendering to fleeting desire. The beats emerge gradually, alongside the warm melodies, pulsing and wrapping the vocals in a velvety haze.
The chorus drops into something heavier than Bowie’s glossy euphoria, like a lover’s plea against the inevitability of endings, heightening the intimacy and desires. The production swells as it creates a dreamlike tension with the nostalgia and the reckoning united and writhing.
Queen Anne’s “Let’s Dance” is Bowie refracted through the indie-pop prism that pushes through the sentimentality and vulnerability. With this cover, Silverman and Chila transforms the original. Check it out on Spotify.
