Veronica Raine steps into the spotlight with her debut single “august,” a stirring folk-country ballad centered around regret and the dread of mortality. A Southern Alberta native, Raine has already built a reputation for heartfelt lyrics and evocative performances, while appearing on the YYC Songwriter Showdown and the Calgary Songsmiths collection. With “august,” released June 30, 2025, she unveils her most vulnerable work yet, as she pairs lyrical self-disclosure with a hauntingly intimate soundscape shaped by producer Russell Broom and supported by Adam Dowling’s instrumental textures.
The track opens with a jitter of soft percussion, shaking, clinking, then falling away, leaving Raine’s husky, emotive voice suspended over gentle acoustic guitar. From the first lines, she lets listeners in on thoughts that are usually kept hidden. When the drums enter, thumping slow and steady, the mood deepens, and the swelling melodies underneath soften the edges with a warm tenderness. The production frames her voice, letting her sincerity shine through.
Lyrically, “august” is drenched in symbolism and stark honesty, as she sings, “Blame it all on my moon in Pisces, I will go down with all of my crises” combining the self-deprecation with cosmic fatalism to demonstrate how people hide fear behind irony. Elsewhere, “When my friends call I always decline, now I’m someone they’ve never known” devastates as it portrays the loneliness of pulling away from connection until absence reshapes identity. With the refrain, “It’s almost August,” she captures August as an ending, as the last stretch of youth, and as a scapegoat for everything unspoken.
By the time her voice soars over the final chorus, Raine mirrors the listener’s own unspoken anxieties. Listen to “august” by Veronica Raine on Spotify.
