Edinburgh has long had a taste for music that can make darkness feel strangely alive, and Pray Silence seems more than happy to lean into that tradition. The Scottish rock outfit, formed around singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Marky Wildtype and singer, songwriter and multidisciplinary artist Sam Siggs, arrives with a taste for huge riffs, anthemic hooks and lyrics sharp enough to leave a mark. After “DRAGON OF CHAOS” and “KILL ROOM,” its third single, “Liminalland,” continues that heavier resurgence with a sound that is both muscular and melodically inviting.
The track opens with bustling cymbals, melodic guitars and a deep bassline that immediately gives the arrangement a sense of forward motion. Over it, the singer’s husky high voice brings a surprisingly bright edge to the weight of the instrumentation, delivering each line with an engaging immediacy. There is something deliberately restless about the opening, as though the song is gathering momentum beneath the surface before finally letting itself loose.
And then the rhythm kicks harder. Thumping beats collide with grinding, driving guitars, turning the track from a steady rock pulse into something considerably more forceful. The voice rises with it, soaring passionately above the increasingly dense arrangement without losing its melodic character. The guitars have enough grit to satisfy the heavier instincts behind the project, while the vocal hooks keep the song from becoming an undifferentiated wall of noise.
Most importantly, “Liminalland” carries the feeling of a story unfolding rather than simply a collection of riffs stitched together. There is enough movement in the vocal delivery to make you lean closer, curious about where the narrative is heading next. By the time the instrumentation is driving at full force, the song has earned that attention.
If Pray Silence is still gathering momentum before making their live debut, “Liminalland” suggests they have plenty of ammunition waiting.
