Cellarscape, the music project of Independent Music Award-nominated composer and songwriter Paul Terry, makes a triumphant return with Live at Siren FM: The 2011 Acoustic Session. Unearthed from an old laptop, these live radio session recordings from 2011, mixed and mastered by MPSE award winner Tony Lewis, are a nostalgic yet fitting way to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Paul’s indie label, SkyBabyRecords.
Live at Siren FM: The 2011 Acoustic Session kicks off with “Minor Fractures (Acoustic) [Live],” a track that opens with shimmering, steely guitar chords that create sparkling waves of sound, while Paul’s youthful, enthusiastic vocals follow the rhythm passionately.
“Static (Acoustic) [Live]” opens with a steady, slow thumping, almost like a heartbeat. Paul’s voice emerges with a raw, introspective tone, almost a cappella in the beginning, as he sings with emotion and vulnerability. As the song progresses, the intensity builds, especially as the guitars enter. The song becomes increasingly passionate, with Paul delivering the poignant lyric, “Right before my eyes, I am better alone.”
A stripped-down version of a song Paul originally wrote for the feature film The Wake, “Blanket” is one of the album’s standout tracks. With its hypnotic guitar melody and Paul’s sombre delivery, he sings of longing for a partner who once held him close to his heart like a blanket. Like a melancholic lullaby in the bridge, he sings, “Sleep well, my love/The river will take you.” as if consoling himself.
“You Got The Girl (Acoustic) [Live]” is a passionate and memorable closer.Opening with the line, “You got the girl/I got nothing to do,” sets the tone for a song filled with frustration and tension.
Live at Siren FM: The 2011 Acoustic Session by Cellarscape is a beautifully intimate and raw collection of acoustic performances. Check it out on Spotify.
