Steve Montgomery, the BC-based rocker operating under the SkipRock Music banner, is back with Living the Dream Right Now, a nine-track explosion of bright, upbeat, guitar-driven energy. Since kicking off his journey with 2000’s Better Late Than Never, Montgomery has built a rock-solid catalog rooted in real instruments and sharp songwriting. Whether leaning into the reflective melodies of Alone In A Room and Hwy 3A or cranking the amps on Shut Up And Rock and Time To Rock!, he has never lost his spark. His latest release proves that great rock-and-roll is still alive, loud, and ridiculously fun.
Right out of the gate, “Crazy Town” sets the standard with driving fuzzy guitar riffs and thumping drums. Montgomery’s husky vocals cut through the noise as he sings about the world going totally upside down and everyone losing their minds, making you want to jump on the next train to crazy town right alongside him.
By the middle of the record, “A Little Love Gonna Shine” shifts the vibe with a nice, jingling jittery percussion shake coupled with a heavy drum groove. Alongside those signature fuzzy guitars, it creates an irresistible groove that makes you wanna sway and move your feet without missing a beat, perfectly anchored by his raspy, soulful delivery.
When it comes to bringing down the house, the anthemic closer “I Gotta Rock!” hits the nail on the head. Powered by smug, engagingly thumping drums and sharp rhythmic guitars, Montgomery caps off the album on a high note. All in all, Living the Dream Right Now catches lightning in a bottle and leaves no doubt that Montgomery is still living his rock-and-roll fantasy.
