ATMES shows us that house music can also house emotions in his latest single, “Lonely.”
The producer describes it as his “outlet” during a difficult time in his life. The influence of DJ Snake and Malaa is evident in the dark, driving rhythms, but ATMES adds a layer of vulnerability that sets “Lonely” apart.
Produced in his home studio, the song opens with thumping beats and swirling synths hitting our heartbeats with every turn. Vocals emerge, softly singing the refrain, “Help me out,” desperately pleading for connection and tearing the layer of veiled muffling.
As the song progresses, the intensity builds. The beat gets harder, the synths colder, reflecting the growing desperation. Then, a shift. The vocals come clean, raw, and vulnerable. The singer cries out, “I’m so lonely,” the pain palpable in every note. This symbolizes the ache of losing someone special, the feeling of falling without a safety net.
The music returns, dancy as always, with crashing beats and shimmering waves of warm snug synths balancing the other out and flooding the misery away with the connections on the dance floor. It turns out that ATMES’ neighbors knocked on his door to listen to the song and that speaks volumes about the power of “Lonely.” This music transcends genre and connects with us on a human level. It’s a reminder that we’re all connected and that even in our darkest moments, we’re not alone.
