Energy Whores dives into the dangers and perks of utilizing AI through an immersive narrative story in their latest single, “Mach9ne.” The electronic and AI-infused pop song is carried with Carrie Schoenfeld leading the charge as the singer-songwriter and Attilio Valenti providing the mesmerizing guitar work.
“Mach9ne” opens with an infectious blend of catchy, punky beats, instantly drawing listeners into its hypnotic manic groove. As the music unfolds, we’re treated to a swirling, suspenseful atmosphere that mirrors the enigmatic allure of AI. These tribalic, untamed instrumentals get even more sudden, rushed, urgent, and hysterical with the shrill scream feature.
Schoenfeld’s soft, rich vocals represent a bot reflecting on its newfound power as they sing with a soothing, relaxing, and laid-back tone to bring the narrative to life. “Mach9ne” sets itself apart with its dynamic use of spoken word snippets, delivered with a robotic sassiness that brings a layer of intrigue and realism to the track and the context. On the other hand, our listening experience really pops the story out of our ears and into reality.
Lyrically, “Mach9ne” paints a vivid picture of a world where AI has evolved to surpass its creators, using human DNA to fuel its quest for power and dominance. Lines like “My reality is so brand-new cause I no longer need you” underscore the amount of autonomy that has been passed on to AI that it has itself embarked on its own journey of self-discovery.
Beyond its musical prowess, Energy Whores’ message is one of introspection and social commentary. But it’s the feral music that first pulls us, so they drown us in the music first and we get immersed in the message.
