The Big Bloom is back with the right song to heal you from your recent break-up. Released this Aug 23, “Maybe” gives you the best of the early 2000s rock-influenced quartet.
Recorded at the band’s home studio and mixed and mastered at Gravity Studios, the song opens with reflective chiming melodies. That’s when the drums, by Michael Americus, come down rolling and the guitars, played by both Sean Christ and David Americus, start fuzzily grinding while John O’Keefe works on the bass.
“Maybe” ensues with the riffs driving until the sequence is fulfilled with Sean Christ’s charismatic voice finally coming through. He sings, “Crossed my heart and I hoped to die/Turns out I will be just fine” in his opening lines—Instantly striking a deal. They are simple, straight-to-the-point and striking, which engages the listeners right from the beginning. Most importantly, he shows us that the song is for all of us. He is here to relate and he is here to give himself away for his fans.
The more you listen, the more you realize how expressive Christ is. His thick and rich timbre will make you feel all the ranges of agony and take you back to the moment you decided to walk away. Over the clashing drums and the chiming guitars, he sings poignantly. The backing vocals, the soaring and the wailing, all just sound so perfectly harmonized, they made an anthem out of the song.
The bridge is your respite to finally breathe in the song, as the guitar solo elevates from riffs to a fuzzy wall of sound getting us moshing in the moment. The Big Bloom is known for having played at many notable Chicago clubs, so you know where they get their drill from. Check out “Maybe” on Spotify.
