Sydney synth-pop duo Segana, formed by Blair Djuna and JMap after meeting at JMC Academy, have spent years blending pulsing electronics, catchy hooks and pop-minded songwriting. On Midnight Masquerade, that formula takes a darker, more cinematic turn, creating a neon-lit world of temptation, romance, danger and late-night escape across ten energetic tracks.
“Earth to Mercury” kicks things off with smooth vocals, a catchy rhythm and restless momentum, turning ambition into a gravity-defying rush. “Swingin Sixties” then shifts into gritty retro territory, with smoky imagery, fast cars, cigarettes and rock-and-roll fever creating the feeling of a reckless night spiralling out of control. Meanwhile, “How Could They Know” slows the pulse into something more suspenseful, using atmospheric tension and a recurring question to explore secrecy, pursuit and hidden transformation.
Then comes “Dancing in the Rain,” where thunder and rising tides mirror an intoxicating connection. The track finds romance in chaos, while “You’re the One” softens the mood with a slower, sincere love song built around devotion and lasting connection.
The title track, “Midnight Masquerade,” is where Segana’s after-dark aesthetic fully clicks. A hard-hitting steady beat and immersive production support a high, engaging vocal that races forward before soaring with exhilaration. Its masquerade becomes a place where identities blur and rules disappear.
Taken together, the album is a stylish night drive through changing emotional landscapes, bright, bold, restless and unapologetically alive.
