Multitalented artist Chellcy Reitsma’s newly launched album, ‘Momento Mori’, samples numerous genres from blues to alt-rock, rockabilly, and Americana and produces tracks of a unique retro style with a film noir edge that carry the unanimous message of the fleetingness of life. The 10-track album manages to have something for fans of all the aforementioned genres and creates a space where each is in harmony without feeling overcrowded.
The Dutch-American singer-songwriter starts the album off with ‘Dark Times’, which portrays both instrumentally and vocally, just that. The energetic drum refrain with the occasionally striking guitar riff serves as the perfect environment for the singer’s dark and gritty vocals, and the instrumental outro makes this the perfect opening track to hype a listener up.
‘Sad Lullaby’ changes the soundscape with its chilly and haunting vocals adjacent to a synth beat that resembles that of a choir. The intro has some distinct notes of a piano, but down the song, only the synth compliments Chellcy’s spooky vocals along with the periodic drums and eerily deep male chorus.
Next, ‘To My Surprise’ brings about a surprise with an almost 2-minute monologue about death and their journey with learning the violin. It is accompanied by an ensemble of a piano and violin, with the violin getting more intense as the track progresses.
‘Momento Mori’ ends with ‘Boat to Nod—Remix’, which is exactly what it suggests—a remix of an earlier track. Chellcy’s airy and high vocals really shine through in this track, especially with the intense sets of drums and beat-setting cymbals. It hooks with a short section of an electric guitar and continues with the drums and the ethereal vocals of the artist lamenting about love.
