Halloween gets a healthy dose of goofy mischief with Sheldon Mashugana’s cover of “Monster Mash,” the beloved seasonal classic originally made famous by Bobby Pickett in 1962. The comedic alter ego of Dallas-based performer Dean Morgan, Sheldon is all about slapstick silliness and feel-good entertainment, and this rendition wastes no time getting into the spirit. Opening with a slushy, squelchy sound before the playful backing music kicks in, the track sets up a delightfully ridiculous atmosphere that feels ready-made for a Halloween party full of giggling kids and grown-ups who refuse to take themselves too seriously.
Morgan brings plenty of personality to the performance. His thick, raspy voice delivers the lyrics with a playful, comical swagger, keeping the familiar melody lively while giving the song his own goofy stamp. The rhymes land with an easy, bouncing rhythm, and the clever insertion of “Mashugana” into the chorus makes the cover feel like more than a straightforward retread. It’s a natural fit for a character whose entire appeal rests on making people laugh. Adding to the fun, the exaggerated harmonies pop up with a wonderfully silly energy, giving the performance an extra theatrical flourish.
The recording uses a karaoke backing track rather than live instruments, with production and mixing handled at Justin Pierce Music studio in Dallas. That stripped-back approach keeps the focus squarely on Sheldon’s vocal antics and the song’s instantly recognizable charm. Morgan admits that getting the pacing right took some figuring out, but once he found his groove, the performance came together.
Behind the monster-themed fun is an effort to offer a little happiness in this heavy world. With 18 slapstick comedy films already featured on YouTube and further television appearances planned in Santa Fe, Morgan continues to bring his lighthearted character to new audiences. “Monster Mash” is a playful extension of that persona, serving up nostalgia, silly vocal flourishes, and a chorus with a personal twist. It may not reinvent the Halloween classic, but it knows exactly what it wants to do: get people smiling, singing along, and embracing the wonderfully ridiculous side of spooky season.
