Naïve by Petra Jasmiina: Review
‘Naïve’ by Petra Jasmiina is a surreal song with a fairy-like vibe. Starting off the song with elongated humming, sharp intakes of breaths, and mystical chanting is a very unique approach that truly showcases the mystique and creativity of Jasmiina and lays the basis of the entire song in simple perfection.
Singer-songwriter of Finnish origins, Jasmiina’s ethereal voice flows freely with magical dips and perfectly captures the essence of ‘dreaming’. Inspired by Marie Antoinette, Bridgerton, and Jane Austen; all iconic examples of Regency-era literature, the music video portrays the satirical fairy tale with flair and grace and incredibly accurate costumes despite being set in modern-day New York City. For example, the music video pays homage to Marie Antoinette by remaking the iconic ‘let them eat cake scene’, but instead putting Jasmiina’s touch to the scene; showing her chugging alcohol with makeup and cake smudged all over her face.
The music video draws attention to independent artists’ struggles with harsh reality while celebrating their strength never to stop believing in art and the tremendous power of imagination. Filmed by Aleksei Postnikov, the handheld camera follows Jasmiina around New York City; a perfect choice as it puts the people watching right in the shoes of the escapist characters or “naïves”. “I’m a diamond in the dark. Forgotten how to shine, need you to remind me” – a simple introductory lyric with an underlying depth to it, perfectly executed with minimalistic accompanying instruments, keeping the focus fully on the words. “Naïve is an ode to dreamers everywhere”, flawlessly said as that is exactly what the imaginative music video along with Jasmiina’s surreal vocals does.
