Alex Reese’s Neon Echoes, released on May 16, 2025, is a magnetic EP that hums with introspection, nostalgia, and understated experimentation. Written, performed, and largely recorded solo—often on an iPad while traveling—this London-based artist’s project gets you like a diary through shimmering synths and muffled vocals.
The opening track, “Violet Sky,” immediately sets the tone with a thudding, pulsating beat beneath gleaming synth sparkles. Reese’s voice, drenched in reverb and slightly muffled, floats steadily over the calm, detached, almost meditative electronic haze. The contrast between the robotic, mechanical techno flourishes and his chilled vocal delivery creates a hypnotic tension, like listening to your own thoughts while dancing in slow motion.
“Drunk” is a standout, pairing a bouncy, beachy rhythm with lyrics that hint at emotional aftermath and quiet resignation. Reese sings, “I am not waiting for you,” and then softly confesses that he’s still not fine, reaching for another bottle of wine. A subtle female vocal weaves beneath his, bringing softness and further sensitivity to the track’s breezy melancholy.
Then comes “Nowhere,” perhaps the concluding chapter of the EP. It begins with tender acoustic strumming and shaky percussion. Reese’s vocals, once again hushed and intimate, give the song a dreaminess, especially when a sharp synth line pierces through in the latter half. It’s contemplative, a little fragile, but grounded in feeling.
