Jazz-rooted musician David brings a lifetime of experience into focus with his latest body of work, building on the foundation laid by his debut album “Back on Track” and continuing forward with “Next Step”. Originally from Hempstead, New York, David’s journey began as a self-taught bassist while studying Computer Science at St. John’s University in Queens, eventually evolving into a seasoned artist shaped by both formal mentorship and real-world performance. His time studying with Cecil McBee and performing alongside respected figures across the New York jazz scene laid the groundwork for a sound rooted in tradition yet driven by personal growth.
Drawing from years spent immersed in live performance and collaboration, David’s music reflects a deep understanding of jazz as both a technical and emotional language. Influenced by his early work with artists such as Talib Qadir, Cecil Bridgewater, and the legendary Betty Carter, he channels a sense of discipline and spontaneity that defines classic jazz expression. His time touring with Carter, in particular, becomes a defining thread – informing not just his playing style but his approach to arrangement, phrasing, and musical storytelling.
Sonically, “Next Step” unfolds with a rich, ensemble-driven warmth, anchored by David’s steady, expressive basslines. The arrangements breathe with intention, allowing each instrument to occupy its own space while contributing to a cohesive whole. Saxophone lines weave fluidly through the mix, the piano offers both structure and color, and the drums provide a dynamic, responsive backbone. There’s a natural, unforced chemistry throughout, giving the project a live, almost conversational feel that mirrors the spontaneity of a jazz session.
At its core, the album feels like a continuation of a personal and artistic evolution. Through original compositions, David captures moments of reflection, growth, and forward motion without losing sight of his roots. Supported by the collective strength of CreativeTone – featuring Raquel Lozano, Derrick James, Fareed Mahluli, Joel Stewart, and Tracy Williams – the project balances technical precision with emotional depth, resulting in a body of work that feels both grounded and quietly ambitious.
