Released on October 12, 2024, “Night Shift” is Dublin-based vocalist Linda Dumitru’s latest manifestation of ingenuity as she brings her classical opera training and unique voice to this risqué, tongue-in-cheek single. Inspired by the sensual side of her life, Linda explores carnal desires through her distinct musical lens.
“Night Shift” opens with crunchy, shaking percussion sparkling, shimmering, and jingling. They remind you of waist tassels shaking as a dancer sways her hips. From there, the melody weaves in smoothly, setting the stage for Linda’s lush, operatic vocals to enter. She has a dripping, honey-sweet-like, thick, and rich voice that seems to be rising all the way from her body. The way she sings reminds you of exotic dancers, and her voice flows like a snake swooning and swaying to its master’s tune with its curves smoothly rippling out.
The instrumental backdrop is equally intoxicating, with glistening, dreamy production. In the chorus, an all-engulfing distortion accompanies the music and shows us just how engrossing the carnal desires are. After her voice soars, reaching the peak of her desires, the guitar solo by Pantheïst’s Atanas Kyurchiev comes along to sweep us off our feet.
Lyrically, Night Shift plays on the metaphor of working late at night, humorously blending professional terminology with the suggestive undertones of desire. The chorus—”On the night shift, the feels so wrong but right shift”—captures the playful and risqué atmosphere that Linda aims for, while her operatic delivery adds a layer of elegance to the otherwise cheeky subject matter.
With influences ranging from Kate Bush and Florence Welch to Trent Reznor, Linda Dumitru is inspired by the best only, like herself. Check out her other works on Spotify.
