Thomas O’Shea gives glossy 2010s-inspired pop a darker twist on “No I Won’t,” turning the familiar shape of a messy love song into something far more personal. Written, produced, performed, mixed and mastered entirely by O’Shea in his Madison, Wisconsin home studio, the single grew from an experiment in recreating different producers’ styles before he realized the sound deserved to become a release of its own.
The track immediately pulls you in with shimmery music, glitzy smacks and an expansive, immersive atmosphere, underpinned by deep bass that gives the polished production some weight. O’Shea delivers his vocals coolly and smugly, carrying a confident defiance that makes the song feel almost playful even when its subject gets considerably darker. The production draws from the huge-but-minimal sensibility of Benny Blanco alongside the pop instincts of Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber, while modern influences including Jon Bellion, Sabrina Carpenter and Benson Boone help keep the sound from becoming pure nostalgia.
But beneath that bright surface is the real surprise. “No I Won’t” disguises a story about O’Shea’s relationship with alcohol and drugs around the time he turned 21 as though it were another toxic-romance narrative. That framing gives the song an intentionally strange tension: the music sounds sleek and familiar while the subject matter keeps slipping somewhere much more unsettling. Its hip-hop-influenced flow and unexpected lines add to the feeling that you are never quite sure what is coming next.
O’Shea also pushes the arrangement without overcrowding it. He experiments with keeping the production minimal while making it feel enormous, particularly during the final pre-chorus and hook, where elements introduced earlier return in layered form. At the end of the day, the song works because it refuses to explain itself immediately.
