Cardiff rock outfit Underlowe arrive with “No Pictures,” an energetic pop-punk cut that turns the simple act of going out with friends into a small rebellion against the endless pressure to document every moment. Built around the chemistry of guitarist and producer Jacob Dennis, bassist and lead vocalist Alfie Mac, drummer Isaac Walker and keyboardist Keaton Lammy, the band combines classic pop-punk instincts with a thicker, more contemporary rock production.
The track immediately proves that it knows how to have fun. Gritty, fuzzy guitars churn through a catchy, upbeat arrangement while the drums keep everything head-bobbing and propulsive. Underneath it all, the bass adds a thunderous foundation, giving the song considerably more weight than its breezy premise might suggest. Alfie’s husky, tender voice brings an appealing vulnerability to the noise, soaring through the arrangement with an engaging delivery that keeps the melody firmly in focus.
There is plenty happening beneath that accessible surface. The song’s opening reportedly begins with filtered vocals and layered clean guitars before exploding into crashing distortion, creating a sharp transition from intimacy to full-band release. Galloping snare fills add extra momentum, while the double-tracked guitars and bass give the production a dense Y2K-core character. A windy, intricate guitar solo provides another burst of movement, letting the instrumental arrangement briefly take centre stage.
That contrast fits the song’s subject surprisingly well. “No Pictures” is ultimately about being present—having a drink, talking, walking around with friends and allowing a moment to exist without immediately turning it into social-media content. Even the lyrics’ fragments about remembering old conversations and keeping someone close carry that sense of valuing lived experience over documentation.
Having grown from an old voice-note jam and remained under wraps for more than a year, “No Pictures” feels like a song that finally gets to step into the light.
