Twelve Days in June, helmed by Dave Hulegaard, gets raw and visceral about heartbreak in his latest single, “Numb.” Released on March 22, this single marks a departure from the artist’s previous work, showcasing more intensity than ever to resonate with the most impassioned listener out there.
Influenced by bands like The Smashing Pumpkins, The Foo Fighters, and Silverchair, “Numb” captures ’90s alternative rock with the artist’s own style. The song opens with a building riff and a ringing, eerie guitar chord, setting a haunting and ominous tone from the start. As the drums emerge with pounding intensity, the singer’s voice seethes with slow-boiling anger, conveying the bitterness and frustration of heartbreak.
The lyrics delve into the depths of emotional pain and resentment, with lines like “I hate you / It’s in your head / What was lost is dead,” capturing the raw intensity of the protagonist’s feelings. Despite the darkness of the subject matter, there’s a cathartic release in the music as the distorted guitars buzz with rage, mirroring the bursts of emotion that accompany heartbreak.
Dave Hulegaard’s vocal delivery is impassioned and filled with raw emotion, driving home the song’s message of allowing oneself to feel and express the pain of loss. “Numb” is your permission to feel all you feel, no matter how uncomfortable or stressful.
“Numb” is the first taste of what’s coming up for Twelve Days in June. It’s only the first single from their upcoming album—their upcoming era. Taking a nosedive into the 90s, the project is coming out strong against struggles.
