Off My Mind by Gabriel Bishop: Review
Brisbane-based solo producer and singer-songwriter Harry Wells goes by the stage name Gabriel Bishop. His latest release ‘Off My Mind’ is a charming flirty summer single telling the story of a forbidden love.
The song is a refreshing take on a modern-day romance. Gabriel uses floaty keys and laid-back drums combined with his upbringing as a folk singer-songwriter to tell the story of a love that shouldn’t happen but he had other plans. The combination of his skills as a producer with the love of early 2000s Hip-Hop and RnB and his folk roots come together beautifully as we hear him building up the verse towards the irresistibly catchy chorus. The rhythm of the verse has a pulled-back sway that is beautifully complimented by the floaty keys. As he gets to the chorus of the song, he switches to a more aggressive kick drum and cranks up the bass. In the second verse, we see a shift in the pulled-back rhythm switching to a rap-styled vocal line and introduction of rhythm guitar. The punchy drums just make the song pop.
Lyrically, the song is an infectiously flirty number trying to take her away from another man. Hot take, but let’s let it slide as John Lyly put it, “All is fair in love and war.” The song is meticulous in what it needs to say and it does it so well in just two and a half minutes. That’s really the only gripe I have. I wish it were a little longer. So put on your headphones and give it a try. I promise you’ll love it too.
