On “Déjà Vu,” Toro y Moi takes a stroll down memory lane. It’s the fourth single from his tenth studio album, MAHAL, which will be released on Dead Oceans on April 29.
Chaz Bear (Toro y Moi) has released “Déjà Vu,” a psychedelic new music. It’s a track from the South Carolina-born, Bay Area-based chillwave pioneer’s upcoming 10th studio album MAHAL, which will be released on April 29. MAHAL will be his first Dead Oceans release after nine albums on the D.C. independent label Carpark Records.
The new song follows “Postman” and “Magazine,” which were published together in January in conjunction with MAHAL’s announcement, and “The Loop,” which was released last month as the fourth single from the upcoming album. It has a slightly darker, murkier vibe than the project’s prior releases, substituting a crunchy, driving psych-rock guitar direct from the turn of the 1970s for Bear’s normally soft, dreamy instrumental collages, with period-appropriate bass and drums to match. During a lull in the action, he sings, “Déjà Vu in a town like this / Only makes me miss / Everything all about you / Everything that we would do,” yearning for a person gone to the past.
Bear explores the United States in a white stretch limo with the viewer in tow in the Justin Morris-directed music video for the song. Check out Toro y Moi’s upcoming tour dates below and watch the video below.
