On their new single “Roman Candles,” Death Cab for Cutie embrace existential angst + announces a new album “Asphalt Meadows”

Death Cab For Cutie’s latest full-length album was Thank You for Today in 2018, but they’ve been keeping active since then. Frontman Ben Gibbard provided daily solace throughout the COVID-19 lockdown with his “Live From Home” livestreams, which garnered more than $250k in donations and supplies for Seattle-area relief agencies. In ahead of the Georgia runoff elections, Death Cab for Cutie released 2020’s The Georgia EP as a 24-hour Bandcamp exclusive. This year’s birthday homage to Yoko Ono, Ocean Child: Songs Of Yoko Ono, was likewise curated by Gibbard.

Death Cab for Cutie has announced their eleventh album, Asphalt Meadows, which will be released on September 16 and produced by John Congleton. They’ve also released a lead single, “Roman Candles,” which features a Juliet Bryant-designed lyric video. “The words were cobbled from a few of different songs dealing with my general sense of concern; the sensation that the fabric that holds a functioning society together was breaking during the pandemic,” Gibbard says of “Roman Candles.”

Death Cab for Cutie will also be touring in support of Asphalt Meadows. On select dates, Low and Yo La Tengo will join the tour. Tickets will go on sale on May 20th, and additional information can be found here.
