Clayton Brown sings of the hard knocks and hindrances in adult life, declining mental health from peer pressure, societal expectations, losing relationships, and self-doubt in his new EP, โOpen Your Mind.โ A folksy, alternative rock ranting tirade of an EP, โOpen Your Mind,โ is redolent of the early 2000s sound. The youthful, pitchy voice of Clayton evokes a frustrated demeanor. The almost teen rock vibes help in crafting the mood.
Brown broke all the rules in his EP by not conforming to the typical rules. He has no specific chorus in his song, and only once or twice does the songโs title come up in his lyrics. No verse is duplicated, and everything feels original, as though Brown is telling us a story where a chorus or repetitive verse would impede his storytelling process.
Open Your Mind comprises 5 tracks, each reckoning a sense of doubt, difficulties, insolvency, and regret. The first one being, โToo Good For My Own Good,โ conveys depression relating to Brownโs disappointments and failures. It lays the groundwork for the rest of the album, aiding the listeners in dipping into the unbridled and unreserved reality of Clayton Brown. But this goes beyond Brown himself as the rest of the album unfolds, giving us more to relate to, especially as adults.
Released on September 23rd last year, โOpen Your Mindโ has garnered a lot of love amongst music lovers for its driving bass line and thrumming heavy drum beats behind a diaristic lyrical composition and a similar tempo found in each track. If you are someone who respects transparency, โOpen Your Mindโ is the EP for you.
