Perfect Stranger x Gretzky’s Advice by Ben Teeny: Review
The latest release from the Canadian emo-pop artist is a story of falling for your best friend and the aftermath of it.
The release is a two-song single that may remind someone of the ol’ days of vinyl and cassettes having ‘B-sides’. The first song of the single is Perfect Stranger. It is a song about the ever-so-relatable story of falling for your best friend but you cannot muster up the courage to ask them out directly so you be extra dramatic and write a song about it thinking, “Yeah! That should make her fall for me.” But it doesn’t. It may not have worked out for him, but this beautifully processed sonic collage of dreamy vocals is surrounded by an arpeggiated bass, catchy guitar parts, and upbeat synths still work great as an ask-out song or something to listen to while you daydream about your crush.
Gretzky’s Advice is the second song and it follows the aftermath of the unrequited love of Perfect Stranger. The regret and the remorse of being afraid and not taking chances when arose. This guitar-driven heart-retching song brings out the emo kid out of anyone when it gets to the chorus. The synth on this one has a catchier melody than the first and the bass is a bit tighter– a perfect candidate for a heartbreak emo rock anthems playlist.
