The Mustard take on a beloved Simple Minds deep cut and come away with something that feels both respectful and refreshingly their own. Their version of “Someone,” originally featured on New Gold Dream, doesn’t simply recreate the classic track—it reimagines it through the lens of the Bracknell outfit’s expansive indie new-wave sound, trading nostalgia for momentum while preserving the emotional core that made the original so enduring.
For a band whose identity is rooted in towering synth textures, floating guitars, and larger-than-life rhythms, “Someone” feels like a natural fit. Yet what makes this release especially intriguing is its origin story. Rather than emerging from a carefully controlled studio session, the recording began life as a live performance captured through a mixing desk at a show in Staines. That raw performance was later refined into a polished release, but thankfully none of the electricity was ironed out along the way.
Right from the start, bustling guitars shimmer across the mix while powerful drums drive the song forward with relentless purpose. The tempo feels noticeably more urgent than the original, giving the track a lively, dancefloor-ready pulse that immediately grabs attention. It is easy to imagine this version igniting a festival crowd, bouncing between nostalgia and fresh excitement in equal measure.
At the center stands the vocal performance. Delivered in a deep, rich register, the singer balances restraint and passion beautifully, allowing the emotion to simmer beneath the surface before gradually breaking through. There is strength in every line, but also vulnerability, making the song feel heartfelt rather than simply energetic.
The production amplifies that balance. Layers of synths create a cinematic backdrop while the guitars gleam and surge overhead, all anchored by a rhythm section that never lets the momentum dip. The result is vibrant, immediate, and remarkably alive.
By speeding up the pace and leaning into their own identity, The Mustard breathe new life into “Someone.” It is a cover that understands the source material but isn’t afraid to take a different road, and that confidence makes all the difference.
