Point Me East by John McDonough: Review
John McDonough’s latest single “Point Me East,” is a hauntingly beautiful and emotive track sung from the perspective of the Husky Clipper, the eight-man racing shell that won gold in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. This is the third single released from his 2022 concept EP, “We’ll Answer the Call” which showcases the singer-songwriter’s immense talent through his passionate vocals and finger-picked acoustic guitar.
One of the things that make “Point Me East” stand out is its unique point of view. The fully restored Husky Clipper, on display at the University of Washington Shell House, serves as a powerful reminder of the athletes who rowed it to victory and the sacrifices they made. This song is a tribute to their hard work and determination, and it will inspire generations to come. McDonough sings from the perspective of the boat, giving the listener a sense of the Husky Clipper’s power and determination as it reminisces its glory days. The lyrics are evocative and painterly, depicting the time it had in the water with a sense of nostalgic intensity that is both palpable and moving. McDonough’s airy vocal delivery is powerful and emotive, with a voice that hits all the right notes befitting the retired boat. The musicianship on display is top-notch, with the finger-picked acoustic guitar that is both intricate and expressive.
Overall, “Point Me East” felt like the perfect write-off to the concept EP. Be sure to check out the rest of the EP, you won’t be disappointed.
