Protagonist by Temperature Falls: Album Review
The newest album by Temperature Falls, “Protagonist,” exemplifies the duo’s genre-defying ingenuity and ability to blur the lines between many influences. Composed of songwriter and vocalist Camilla and multi-instrumentalist Ian J. Ward, the Norwegian duo has a distinct aural niche in the music industry, and “Protagonist” feels like an apt scenario of them pushing the envelope of their vision and sound.
The album begins with the song Apology and comprises unapologetic hypnotic soundscapes and industrial-rock antics, all of which are tied together by astonishing consistency. Despite the great diversity of sounds and inspirations on the album, ranging from industrial rock to electronic pop, everything feels like it belongs as a cohesive unit. This is a great challenge for many artists, but Temperature Falls does not “Hide” or “Run Away” from flaunting their talent.
The sound of “Protagonist” is immersive and cinematic, with expansive and hypnotic textures that give the music a dreamlike, otherworldly feel that screams “I Am Different.” Camilla’s ethereal vocals complement the similarly exotic and occasionally dystopian instrumentation creating “Moment of Loneliness”. The lyrics are both straightforward and cryptic, blending excellent vocal melodies and potent dynamics with sophisticated songwriting.
Overall, “Protagonist” is an album that fans of Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, Chvrches, Dead Rituals, and DIIV will absolutely love. Although industrial rock is an acquired taste, Temperature Falls has crafted a one-of-a-kind release that appeals to electronic, darkwave, and even dare I say, pop listeners alike.
