Rebel Soul by Coco Bevan: Review
Coco Bevan’s debut single ‘Rebel Soul’ is a powerful anthem of empowerment. The Australian singer-songwriter’s raw, uncompromising, and thought-provoking music has all the makings of a global musical phenomenon.
The song’s pop structure enables it to include a wide range of musical styles, including techno, lo-fi, pop, and RnB that will appeal to a wide variety of listeners. The addition of Coco Bevan’s vocals instantly elevates the song and its listeners’ moods. She has brilliantly portrayed the feeling of the joyful liberation of going against the flow taking a shot at your own luck proving your doubters wrong.
Right from the start, “Rebel Soul” introduces Coco Bevan and what she’s all about with a grungy guitar riff. As the song progresses vocal overlays are added that are the first hints of the song’s genre-bending qualities. As it gets to its chorus, one might expect blazing guitars crashing down but Coco Bevan catches the listeners off guard and hits them with a techno-like bass drop. The song is full of pleasant surprises like this and I don’t really wanna ruin it for you by telling you every one of them. Every time you listen to the song, each of these little surprises reveals themselves to you making it a very enjoyable experience every time. She unapologetically demonstrates her command of silky soft vocals, a grittiness of an electronic beat, and more, making for a sound that distinguishes apart from mainstream music today.
