“Under The Purple Lights” by Rich Kid Express, a solo recording project led by Rob Richardson, is a musical journey through various rock styles and influences released on Sept 15. In this EP, Rob showcases his talents as a songwriter, performer, and producer, handling all aspects of the music creation process.
The EP kicks off with “U Never….,” a track evocative of the sounds of Alice Cooper and Judas Priest. From the very start, it grabs your attention with a heavy, infectious pulse. The drums and riffs jam energetically. They provide a dynamic backdrop for Rob’s commanding vocal performance, filled with spite and power.
“Hard Time Lady” follows, channeling the spirit of Kiss. It features a driving instrumental jam that complements a catchy and flirtatious vocal delivery, asking a girl to drop her hard-to-get act.
“Mr. Spiffstar” takes us back to the early ’80s with its power-pop rock vibe. The music is incredibly catchy and hooky. Meanwhile, Rob’s vocals are sharp and engaging, with intriguing storytelling.
“That’s The Way” shifts into a glam rock style reminiscent of ’70s acts like T-Rex, Slade, Sweet, and Kiss. The track kicks off with a shimmering riff, and Rob’s idealistic and purely romantic vocal performance drives the song forward.
Closing the EP is “The Dotted Line,” which delves into a ’80s rock sound. Rob’s vocals retake center stage, pushing forward with the guitars and telling us the story of a rock star who believes he is losing his pulse.
“Under The Purple Lights” is a diverse and engaging EP, honoring the best of rock eras and urging rockers to refresh their memories with a contemporary edge.
