Leeek’s “Runaway” is an evocative indie pop/disco ballad that captures the turbulence of a conflicted relationship, exploring themes of entrapment, yearning, and self-discovery. As the second single from their upcoming debut EP Phase One, the track delivers an introspective narrative of relationships, framed within the shimmering textures of indie pop and disco influences, mixed by Eikie and mastered by Rune Lak.
Recorded at Downfront Studios, the song begins with vibrant, fluid melodies that seamlessly transition into a steady, tapping beat. The instrumental backdrop enhances the duality of the song’s narrative—an outward vibrancy masking an inward struggle.
The singer’s husky and grainy voice enters tender, vulnerable and desolate. He sings with an apprehensive and concerned tone. Amidst the funky groove and the heavy, vibrant pop melodies floating above, the ghostly harmonies and layered vocals almost merge with the atmosphere and amplify the mood. The song brings a catchy way of delivering fear.
The lyrics detail the internal monologue of someone grappling with the dichotomy of staying in a suffocating relationship or breaking free. Lines like “Empty spaces inside me / I look at you and don’t feel complete” encapsulate the emptiness and incompleteness that pervades the relationship. The refrain, “Runaway, runaway, runaway / Oh, should I run, should I run away,” becomes a haunting mantra, underscoring the cyclical torment of indecision.
“Runaway” not only invites listeners to dance but also encourages reflection, creating a poignant juxtaposition between its catchy melodies and its exploration of vulnerability and internal strife. Its intriguing music video shows the singer running through the streets as if he is being hunted. Check it out on YouTube.
