Jim Klein and Ian Jamison’s collaborative effort, Sailing Symphony, is an EP named after a once dear friend and mentor of Jim Klein and a passionate sailor, Waddy Garrett. The EP, released on December 25, 2023, embarks on a musical cruise quite like none other.
The first track, “I. Sailaway,” is a perfect way of starting the collection as it balances the lows with the highs with a reflective vantage. Beginning with deep and low grave music, something like a gothic story unfolds on an old Hollywood silent movie screen. The string arrangement notably narrates a suspenseful story and engulfs the listener in engaging imagery.
Moving to “II. Doldrums” unfolds with swelling energy, delivering deep, thick, and highly emotive tones. The music soars in layers and creates a dramatic and tragic soundscape.
The third track, “III. Storm,” takes a dreamy and whimsical approach, initially presenting a relaxing soundscape. However, the calm before the storm gives way to the music’s heroic and ferocious strings as if the winds are engaged in a war of their own. The track subtly engages the listener, building tension before unleashing its dramatic core.
Concluding with “IV. Ahoy,” the track unfolds with a catchy build-up, transforming into a climactic music procession. The piece rises to celebratory heights and emotively charging pace. It sounds like a poignant salute to Waddy Garrett, who is sailing away to his afterlife.
Klein and Jamison are preparing for the Beethoven in the Rockies Chamber Music series in April 2024, featuring works by various composers, including their own. Their journey seems to be one to watch. Stay tuned for more from this dynamic duo.
