Die Kammer gets the heaviest and the murkiest with their latest album, Season V: Maybe Forgotten. Maybe Glorious. Expect a lot of heavy material, including life and death, with the fleeting contemplations of the sweeping transitions in between, from this season.
The album opens with the cinematic masterpiece, “My Dearie Don’t Worry.” Glinting sounds give way to dark and deep string arrangements, creating a haunting atmosphere that envelops us. Marcus Testory’s vocals are achingly theatrical, conveying anguish and frustration in his vibrato. As the song progresses, thumping beats and climactic instrumentals add layers of intensity, culminating in a cathartic release.
“Ignoring My Safeword” is one of the best, with its theatrical, suspenseful and foreboding instrumentals that thump like a Bond movie soundtrack. Meanwhile, “I’ve Lost My Shadow” gets deep with the cello and even deeper with Testory’s voice etching and gnarling with biting texture in the lowest of his vocal trenches as he looks for his shadow.
“I Am Leaving Now” combines anthemic melodies with introspective lyrics. The layered acoustic guitars create an airy atmosphere, while Testory sings of departure and self-discovery, or even death. The album’s epilogue, “I Am Leaving Now – Epilogue,” comes with a monologue over strumming guitars and a pulsing synth line before Testory’s vocals return with the line, “In the end, we’ll be the heroes of our stories/And in the end, maybe forgotten, maybe glorious” wrapping up the season.
In the end, “Season V: Maybe Forgotten. Maybe Glorious” is a masterful exploration of life’s complexities, presented with depth, nuance, and noir.
