Emerging from the UKโs buzzing indie underground, Crescent continue their slow-burning rise with the striking single โSin Again,โ a track that leans boldly into tension, atmosphere, and emotional theatrics. Formed as a college music project that unexpectedly grew legs, the band, Caleb Hay (guitar, vocals), Millie Jones (keys, vocals), Jake Beddow (bass), and Christian Tunney (drums), has been honing its sound the old-fashioned way, through relentless gigging and sweaty pub stages. That experience shows here. Recorded and mixed by Mark Folland and mastered by Jon Sevink, โSin Againโ feels designed to hit hard in a live setting while still delivering plenty of studio nuance.
Right off the bat, the song kicks open the door with a smug, thick guitar melody that slinks along with deliberate swagger. Then Caleb Hay steps in, not quite singing but delivering a spoken-word confession in a deep, gravelly voice, โForgive me, father, for you know I have sinnedโฆ I am sorry for now, but I may sin again.โ
Just when you think youโve got the vibe pegged, Millie Jones glides in with a completely different energy. Her voice is tender and soft, and fragile, as she weaves vulnerability into the arrangement. Meanwhile, the drums begin thumping steadily in sync with the guitars, creating a teasing rhythm that builds anticipation inch by inch. The whole thing feels like a slow fuse burning toward something bigger.
And then, well, the fuse finally blows. The guitars turn gritty and grinding, the drums pound harder, and Jonesโ vocals soar and wail in the distance. Later on, Hay and Jones finally sing together, his tough-edged delivery clashing and blending with her melodic softness.
Stretching close to seven minutes, โSin Againโ becomes a contagious whirlwind of tension and release. Itโs strange, dynamic, and a little unpredictable, exactly the kind of track that sticks in your head long after the final note fades.
