Step into the dim glow of a late-night bar and you’ll find the heart of Eoin Shannon’s album Every Drunk’s Gotta Story. The Cork, Ireland songwriter builds the entire record around a lounge-bar world where strangers nurse drinks, spill secrets, and wrestle with regret.
Drawing inspiration from crooners and storytellers like Tom Waits, Frank Sinatra, and Bing Crosby, Shannon leans into smoky atmospheres and character-driven lyrics. With contributions from musicians including Andy Warner, Matias Corti Mizrahi, Artem Litovchenko, and others, the album surrounds Shannon’s gravelly, haunting voice with rich instrumentation.
Right from the opening stretch, the record pulls listeners into its slightly mischievous storytelling. “Sweetheart Candy Lovin” struts in with a smug guitar rhythm and hard-thumping drums, setting a playful, gritty voice. Shannon sings, “I just want your sweetheart candy loving,” like someone leaning back on a barstool with a half-smile and a glass in hand.
Soon enough, the album slows down and lets its emotional weight settle. “Bartender” floats in on a soft melody, capturing the bond between a lonely patron and the person pouring the drinks. Shannon sings gently while a female voice slips in beside him, bringing warmth and intimacy, like two voices echoing across the counter during the last hours of the night.
Then comes “Pull Up a Stool,” built around a tender piano and delicate tapping percussion. It starts like a love song but slowly reveals the empathy of the bartender who listens to everyone else’s troubles. Shannon asks softly, “Do I make you feel alive? Do I make you feel at home?” and suddenly the whole barroom feels like a confessional.
Later, “Pour Me Some Unconditional Love” flips expectations again, revealing that what sounds like romance is really a portrait of addiction. By the time “Last Call For The Broken Hearted” arrives, Shannon sounds almost prayerful, trailing his hypnotic voice across a glistening guitar while a soaring female vocal rises beneath it. It’s haunting closing moment—one last drink before the lights come up and reality walks back in.
