John Galea turns romantic turbulence into a full-blown summer inferno with “Hotter Than A Heatwave,” the second taste of his forthcoming debut album. Following “Songwriter,” which debuted on the Official Top 40 Singles UK Chart, this Dance/Pop/Garage-leaning single finds the award-winning singer-songwriter embracing a brighter, more sensual sound. It has already made an impact, debuting at #8 on the iTunes chart in its first week, and its sun-soaked identity is perfectly suited to a track inspired by one particularly hot afternoon.
The song wastes little time heating things up. Deep bass rolls underneath shimmering production while sharp, sizzling cymbals splash through the arrangement, creating an almost tactile sense of heat. Galea’s smooth, polished voice glides over the groove before soaring into an alluring falsetto, giving the performance an unusually seductive edge.
Lyrically, “Hotter Than A Heatwave” uses temperature as a metaphor for a relationship caught between attraction and exhaustion. The narrator is simultaneously intoxicated and overwhelmed, describing love as something that burns, races through the body, and threatens to spin completely out of control. The recurring “heatwave” hook is deliberately uncomplicated, which makes it easy to latch onto after just a few listens.
Longtime collaborator Oscar Lo Brutto handles the production, while remixes from LGBTQIA+ artist Bright Light x2 and 7th Heaven push the song further toward the dance floor. With a music video filmed between Miami’s South Beach and Malta’s Mediterranean sunshine, “Hotter Than A Heatwave” practically arrives wearing sunglasses.
It is slick, catchy and unapologetically summery—and beneath all that heat, there’s a relationship catching fire.
