“Somebody’s Always Doin’ Something 2 Somebody” lands as DownTown Mystic’s final swing of 2025, and it couldn’t feel more like a victory lap. Dropping ahead of the upcoming Mystic Highway EP, the single arrives with all the backstory you’d expect from a veteran who’s been keeping rock’s pulse steady for decades. Sha-La Music lined up a busy fall, as the single hits US radio October 7, streaming October 10, followed by the EP on November 7. There’s even the first-ever AI-crafted video for DTM, courtesy of Richard Levinsohn and Rick Lee Vinson, hinting at the future while the music stays rooted in tradition.
And speaking of roots, the EP features a stacked lineup, with Jeff Levine laying down Moog, piano, and organ, making up the elite rhythm tandem of Steve Holley and Paul Page anchoring five of the six tracks; and guitar firepower from Lance Doss, Bruce Engler, and Justin “JJ” Jordan. DownTown Mystic’s Robert Allen jokes he aimed to be “the worst player in the band,” and honestly, with a crew like this, that’s one way to guarantee the songs cook. The project sits comfortably in the same lane as his sync-friendly catalog, which racked up placements this year in films like Everything’s Going to Be Great and Sovereign.
Onto the single. “Somebody’s Always Doin’ Something 2 Somebody” kicks off with a tight, punchy beat that locks in fast. The guitars rev with a melodic swagger, sliding in with that classic rock sneer, while the vocal comes in thick, confident, and just a little smug. The opening lines, “Ever since the world began and God created woman from the rib of a man” sets up the song’s wry commentary on human behavior. By the time he hits the hook, “Somebody’s always doing something to somebody,” the whole thing settles into a timeless groove. He goes on to sing of the devious things that people do in the name of love and so on. With the killer backbeat and the charisma oozing from his lips, the song is fine and fair.
It’s rock ’n’ roll doing what it does best, as it rolls down Mystic Highway with no signs of slowing.
