With Tell Me No, LACHYO cracks open the door to Friday Night, and what spills out is a glossy, grounded, and emotionally resonant indie-pop anthem. Hailing from the stillness of rural Australia but dreaming in widescreen, LACHYO’s latest is a self-produced leap into shimmering alt-pop, drenched in synths, layered beats, and enough sincerity to stop you in your tracks.
The title track opens with a calming landscape, rife with warm, immersive textures that sit like a sunset just out of reach. LACHYO’s husky, tender, and echoing vocals float in, singing with calm certainty, “No, I don’t wanna waste it / Nobody’s gonna tell me no.” He defies in his calm manner, self-assured and self-made. And fittingly so, as this is his first fully self-produced single. He has shifted a bit from his earlier acoustic grit to this polished, atmospheric sound. Looks like he is levelling up to another era.
And just when you think you’ve got a read on the vibe, “Version 3” swings the mood with a head-nodding beat and playful reverb that makes LACHYO’s voice dance between clarity and distortion as he sings of being lost in love. Like tuning a radio between emotional frequencies, he gets us engaged in this engaging, catchy effect. By “All I Wanted,” the guitars get grittier, the drums hit harder, and his youthful, charming vocals take center stage again with all that vulnerability pouring out with transparency. It’s got that heartbreakingly aware vibe, as he sings of being powerless against another’s whims, be that a partner or the world.
